Where is Charlestown?
Located on Boston Harbor, Charlestown is separated from Beacon Hill, the West End, & the Financial District by the Charles River, but is connected by a series of bridges and pedestrian walkways for easy access for all. To the East, Charlestown looks across the Boston Harbor to East Boston. It connects best by roadway to Chelsea and Cambridge & by car or water taxi to the Waterfront and Financial District. Charlestown is listed in zip code 02129 (use for your Ballast MLS Advanced Property Search by zip code).
Why Live in Charlestown?
Overlooking Boston Harbor, Charlestown is Boston’s second oldest neighborhood, rich in history and home to the Bunker Hill Monument and the USS Constitution, which is docked in the Charlestown Navy Yard. A haven for young professionals working in the Financial District or the Back Bay, Charlestown is a very social, friendly neighborhood. Enjoy the quiet neighborhood feel of Charlestown, and visit some of its newest shops and restaurants. In 2007, a $3.7 million renovation of the Bunker Hill Monument was completed, lighting the Monument for all to see. While many residents walk or take the water taxi from the historic Navy Yard, Charlestown offers bus service right into the Financial District. Driving is not a problem as traffic is typically not an issue and the Financial District is a mere 1.5 miles away. Residents can easily access all points North and South of Boston via all major roadways (I-93N/S, I-90 E/W, and routes 1 and 1A).
Emerging Charlestown Real Estate Trends:
When the I-93 Central Artery was dismantled in 2004, Charlestown residents were able to see the Financial District skyscrapers & the newly-built Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge (named in part for the citizens who fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill) for the first time. The view of the Zakim Bridge from City Square Park is arguably one of Boston's best. Instead of facing the old, green steel artery overpass, a Charlestown resident can now enjoy waterfront parks, shops and upscale restaurants in addition to re-vitalized living areas. This massive improvement made Charlestown more livable and a lot of people noticed! Charlestown is now home to many singles, young couples and new families, due to the neighborhood’s friendly feel, its close proximity to the city & its competitive real estate values. Charlestown not only has great views and history, but a diverse collection of beautiful homes and condos. Streets of colorful row houses formed by 18th & 19th century Colonial, Federal and Victorian style-homes and beautiful brownstones are part of what keeps Charlestown the historical center it is today. In recent years, Charlestown has seen the addition of luxury condos and townhouses along the waterfront and has also attracted the attention of many “baby boomers” who like the low-key feel of Charlestown’s waterfront living. Internationally-renowned designer Philippe Starck recently designed the 300+ unit renovation of Parris Landing, fueling the momentum of the luxury condo market on the Charlestown waterfront, with the Basilica, Flagship Wharf, Constellation Wharf and Harbor View Navy Yard condos playing a role in this trend.
